    Core Training for Riders

A Simple Aid to Enhance Core Training for Riders WORDS BY Alexandria Bailey BAppSc., BEd., GradDipEd. Cert III Equestrian Coach www.equicanine.com.au Horses and riders have immensely different brain-body systems that must communicate for the two to work together as a team. Communication occurs through voice, hands, legs and the multifaceted mechanical coupling of the rider’s pelvis with the horse’s back. Horse riding uses all of the body’s core muscle groups to support static postures, like those seen in dressage, western and pleasure riding, and dynamic postures, such as in jumping, vaulting, novelties and hunting; but specifically requires very strong and fit postural muscles. Each rider’s physical structure, their unique shape,…

    Locking Stifles in Horses

Locking Stifles in Horses  By Kentucky Equine Research Staff · May 14, 2014 The stifle joint in a horse’s hind leg corresponds anatomically to the knee joint in the human leg. However, instead of appearing halfway down the limb like the human knee, the horse’s stifle doesn’t even look like a joint because it is hidden within the structure of the horse’s upper hind leg. If you put your hand on the front of the horse’s hind leg where it ties into the flank, you can feel the patella, a small bone that is the anatomic equal of the human kneecap. The patella sits just above the stifle joint where the horse’s…

    Long Reining

A Short Introduction To Long Reining Dr. Thomas Ritter © 2013 (article appeared in issue 18 (2014) of BHM) Why Long Reining? Long reining is an excellent training technique to support the work under saddle, which is quite beneficial for both the horse and rider, and which can be a lot of fun for both. I have always found that horses generally like this type of work, because on the one hand it is easier for the horse, since he does not have to carry the rider’s weight, and on the other hand it creates a closer bond between human and horse, as they literally work “side by side” and the…

    Colour Genetics

Colour Genetics –  Understanding the Basics Written By SHEREE CONROY  with thanks to Leanne Owens (article appeared in issue 14 (2014) of BHM)   The Basics When learning about horse colour genetics, the first thing to know is that there are only two base colours: black and red – everything else you see is a modification of those two colours. So, step one in understanding what causes different horse colours is to remember these two base colours, black based (written as ‘E’ on a DNA test) and red/chestnut based (written as ‘e’ on a DNA test).  From here, colour modifying genes work on the two base coat colours to create all…
